Ecuador earthquake : Death Toll Increases to 262
The Mighty Earthquake has struck Ecuador and it has completely flattened buildings and has shattered day to day lives. The magnitude-7.8 quake, the strongest to hit Ecuador since 1979, was centered on Ecuador’s sparsely populated fishing ports and tourist beaches.
Ecuadorean President Rafael Correa came back immediately from the overseas tour and now is working on the relief measures after the powerful earthquake rocked coastal area of Ecuador. The president was in Rome when the earthquake struck on Saturday night. This caused heavy damage to life and property.
The presidential office released photos immediately from Ecuadorean soil. Death toll continues to rise and so far 262 people were termed dead. Vice President Jorge Glas said that more than 2500 people are injured. Glas also said there is a huge list of missing people and authorities are looking for those people.
But he never disclosed the exact number. Yesterday Pope Francis offered prayers for people of Ecuador and asked the faithful in St. Peter’s Square on Sunday to pray for those suffering in the aftermath of the magnitude-7.8 earthquake.
