No Airport in Amaravathi
The final Master Plan draft of Andhra Pradesh capital region is getting ready. As per our sources the state government reportedly withdrew the idea of international airport in Mangalagiri. Earlier Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu is keen on having the new facility in place at the shortest possible time.
Now Chandrababu Naidu has changed his mind and is in plans to develop the existing airport in Gannavaram. Already 400 acres are being acquired for the airport expansion. The state government reportedly arrived at this opinion after expert’s advice that the airport will not be financially feasible due to close proximity to Hyderabad and Chennai airports.
However this is a good move by state government which was under several financial crunches. The final Master Plan draft will be put up in public domain very soon. The Gannavaram airport is spread across 536 acres and is surrounded by farm lands, and it has been proposed to add 697 acres more under the land pooling system for its expansion, which will pave the way for the expansion of the runway, creation of a bigger terminal, besides facilitating maintenance, repair and overhaul facilities.
