Tension in Jammu and Kashmir !!
Tension has gripped the Kashmir valley after a youth was killed in the security forces' firing on the mob at Mustafabad-Zainakote area in the Srinagar outskirts on Saturday. Police sources said a youth was hit on his head when security forces lobbed smoke shells, fired shots and used lathicharge to disperse a violent mob. He was grievously injured and shifted to Sher-e-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences where he was declared brought dead by the doctors.
The incident occurred in the evening when clashes broke out between the protesters and forces. Protesters were trying to lead a march when they were intercepted by the forces. They fired smoke shells and charged the crowd with canes to chase them away. The engagement continued for hours.
As the news of injury reached the area, people came out of their homes and started protesting. Youth blocked several road junctions and pelted stones. Security forces have rushed in reinforcements to bring the situation under control."There is tension in the area", said a police official.
Earlier Jammu and Kashmir government foiled the `Million March' announced by the separatists to counter Prime Minister Narendra Modi's rally at Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium but imposing curbs and curfew like restrictions across the parts of the Valley.
Curfew-like restrictions were imposed in the sensitive areas of old city to prevent the people from marching towards TRC grounds, which is just 300 meters away from the venue that Modi was to address the crowd. Thousands of police and paramilitary soldiers were deployed to prevent the march.
Barbed wires were rolled out at important road junctions to restrict movements and prevent the separatist march. A few women separatist supporters tried to lead a march but they were detained by the police. Awami Ithaad Party (AIP) led by independent MLA from Langate Sheikh Abdul Rashid aka Engineer Rashid tried to lead a march in the civil lines area but the security forces swung into action and dispersed the mob. In a first of its kind, protestors set off 2,000 black balloons in the air, carrying black flags and slogans against the Prime Minister's rally. "The protestors were dispersed by police by using force, leaving three party workers injured", said a spokesman of AIP.
Stone pelting and clashes were also reported from different parts of the Valley with youth engaging security forces. The battle-like engagement continued for hours between the two sides. Kashmir Valley also observed strike on Saturday against the curbs imposed on the Million March. Most of the separatists were either detained or put under house arrest.
